how to get your best skin


Last night I could feel it coming. That kind of dull ache on my chin when I moved my mouth. Then I felt it, and there was most definitely a noticeable bump. When I woke up this morning I discovered a full blown, red and angry looking pimple. 

I am no longer a teenager, and I take pretty good care of my skin. But with hormones and stress I have continued to get that random, but oh so annoying zit. So, what's a girl to do? 

Well, for starters. I make sure to cleanse my face really well (with a fresh washcloth, that hasn't been sitting next to my sink for weeks and weeks) and I use warm (not boiling hot) water with a gentle cleanser . Now, think back to your last facial and what kind of motions your esthetician used - they were most likely all upward strokes. Fight gravity and use the technique for yourself.

After gently drying my skin, I apply toner. My go-to for years and years and years has been witch hazel. It's cheap, it's effective and once you get past the smell, pretty darn refreshing. Then, apply a moisturizer that isn't too heavy, and you can spot treat with something like Dermalogica's Break Out Control Serum. I have personally had great success with the Dermalogica line and keeping my skin clear, but there are a ton of great products out there that run the spectrum as far as pricing goes. 

One of the other things that I have found to be really helpful in calming down my skin and keeping it clear is to do a weekly (or more often if I have the time) mask and chill time. My two current favorites are Peter Thomas Roth's Irish Moor Mud Purifying Black Mask and this one. I was reluctant at first but I have a friend who swears by it, and now I do too. You can not beat the price (less than $14 for TWO POUNDS - I know, it is totally ridiculous!) and it is super simple to mix up. Just do a 1:1 ratio of the powder to apple cider vinegar - the good stuff, like Bragg's. With both masks, sit back, relax and feel the masks working their magic. 

I really, truly can not stress enough how important it is to really cleanse your skin morning and night. And do not pick at your skin.  I am horrible at this and I need to listen to my own advice, but your skin will thank you. Also, try not to touch your face all the time. We touch so much crap throughout the day, walk through smog and don't even get me started about how our phones are dirtier than public restrooms (yuck!) and then we touch our faces, so all that junky stuff gets on our face, and hello break out city! 

Our skin is our biggest organ, and by taking these extra couple of steps to keep it glowing in addition to regular exercise and eating a well-balanced diet, you can have your best skin, which is even better to apply makeup on!
